British Columbia joined the Confederation of Canada in 1871. Since that time the following people have served as Premier:

Bill Bennett (Social Credit) - 1975 to 1986

David Barrett (New Democratic) - 1972 to 1975

W.A.C. Bennett (Social Credit) - 1952 to 1972

Byron Johnson (Coalition) - 1947 to 1952

John Hart (Coalition) - 1941 to 1947

T.D. Pattullo (Liberal) - 1933 to 1941

Simon Tolmie (Conservative) - 1928 to 1933

John MacLean (Liberal) - 1927 to 1928

John Oliver (Liberal) - 1918 to 1927

Harlan Brewster (Liberal) - 1916 to 1918

William Bowser (Conservative) - 1915 to 1916

Richard McBride (Conservative) - 1903 to 1915

Party government was not introduced to British Columbia until June, 1903. Before that time "group government" existed. This meant that Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) would form alliances around leaders. These alliances were not fixed and were often more personal than political.
