DRIVING BETWEEN CHILLIWACK AND HOPE GETS SAFER

CHILLIWACK – The Province is investing in safety enhancements along Highway 1 and Highway 7 that will make driving safer and easier for motorists while improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. Safety enhancements in the Chilliwack and Hope areas include:

• Installing post-mounted double sided diamond grade delineators along the eastbound and westbound shoulders of Highway 7, from Mission to Hope.
• Adding durable, high-visibility reflective paint in select areas on the east and westbound lanes of Highway 1 between Langley and Hope.
• Installing reflective pavement markers along the edge line and median line of Highway 1.

Why this matters:

• This corridor is prone to heavy rain, fog and snow, which can make driving the corridor challenging through the fall and winter months.
• New technologies in reflective devices make it possible to greatly improve reflective directional guidance that increases driver safety.

Work has already begun and will be completed by October 31, 2011.

Quotes:

“As we get closer to the winter season, we’ll see more rainy days. These upgrades are coming just in time, and will make it much easier for drivers to negotiate our highways in bad weather.”
-Chilliwack MLA John Les

“Our highways are busy, and traffic doesn’t let up in inclement weather. These new reflective delineators will increase visibility, and hopefully, reduce accidents.”
-Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner
