| October 24, 2011 VICTORIA – Chilliwack MLA John Les introduced a Private Member’s Motion in the legislature today, calling for greater accountability and transparency in municipal spending. In his remarks, he expressed hope Adrian Dix and the BC NDP would support this important measure. “There is only one taxpayer, and we want to ensure local governments are maximizing value for taxpayers’ dollars,” says Les. “A Municipal Auditor General will help governments focus spending priorities and find opportunities to be more efficient. Unfortunately, this is something the opposition is clearly against.” The Municipal Auditor General would examine the efficiency and effectiveness of services provided, and help municipalities find greater value from the dollars spent. “Today when the House debate turned to a Municipal Auditor General, the NDP’s true colours came out; they showed they don’t support respecting taxpayers’ dollars,” says Les. “This is not about looking over councils’ shoulders; this is about fairness to taxpayers. We want to make sure they get good value for their money,” says Les. “How can the BC NDP support a Provincial Auditor General and not a Municipal Auditor General? In tough economic times, it’s our responsibility to ensure every dollar is well spent. Frankly, I’m shocked Adrian Dix and his caucus don’t feel the same.” -30- | |
