BC Liberal Government Maintains Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing for Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK – The provincial government is providing $521,503 in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing to the City of Chilliwack through the Strategic Community Investment Fund.

“For the past four years this has been a great way of supporting our local governments,” says Chilliwack MLA John Les. “The city will use this money to provide and improve on the essential services that it offers residents and most importantly public safety.”

“As Chilliwack expands, this program will help the city in building on infrastructure that will accommodate this growth,” says Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner. “Our government is committed to maintaining this funding program which we established in 2004.”

The Strategic Community Investment Fund is a two-year, $232-million initiative consisting of the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program and Small Community and Regional District Grants. Communities received a first payment in spring 2009 and will receive a third payment in early 2010. This is the second installment in support of public safety initiatives and local government operations.

Through the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program, the province has provided 100 per cent of net traffic fine revenues to local government since 2004.  Traffic fine revenue comes from fines on violation tickets, with a municipality receiving an amount based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs.  The Small Community and Regional District Grant allocation is calculated based on population and assessment.
