John recently attended an event to mark and celebrate Sardis Secondary School's 50th anniversary.

Piper Richardson, whose family settled in Chilliwack in 1909, the only Canadian piper to be awarded the Victoria Cross, was killed in October 8, 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. It was thought his bagpipes were forever lost, but were recently discovered at a school in Crieff, Scotland. In July 2006, John was on hand to help announce the construction of new sub-acute care beds at Chilliwack General Hospital.

On June 9, 2006 Provincial and community partners celebrated the opening of the 48 new assisted living apartments at The Cascades development in Chilliwack.

The Central Community Park amphitheatre project has received a $330,000 boost from the Olympic Paralympic Live Sites funding program. Chilliwack-Sumas MLA John Les expresses his happiness with news the provincial government has come to an agreement in principle to move the University College of the Fraser Valley’s Chilliwack campus onto the site of the former CFB Chilliwack. Looking on is Chilliwack UCFV student Annette Vogt and Premier Gordon Campbell who also announced government funding for 1,700 new seats throughout UCFV’s Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission and Agassiz campuses by the year 2010. The new seats are part of the government’s commitment to add 25,000 post-secondary seats to B.C.’s colleges and universities by 2010. July 15, 2004.

Government’s Action Plan for Safe Drinking Water, which protects water from the source to the tap. The announcement was made in Chilliwack, which gets its drinking water from groundwater, and with the new regulations can continue to boast about having the best water in the country. The new regulations establish standards to ensure wells are properly drilled, sealed, maintained and closed plus they establish qualification requirements for well drillers and well pump installers. The Premier also joined Fraser Valley MLAs in announcing an agreement in principle to move UCFV’s Chilliwack campus onto the former CFB Chilliwack. MLAs John Les (Chilliwack-Sumas), John van Dongen (Abbotsford-Sumas) and BC Premier Gordon Campbell unveil the special veteran’s license plate in Victoria. The program, announced Tuesday, starts on June 6, 2004 to honour and recognize the 80,000 veterans living in British Columbia. Veterans who exchange their current license plates can obtain the new license plates free of charge. Forms are available at ICBC and Autoplan brokers. Premier Campbell announced the start of the program Tuesday morning in front of the BC Legislature.
Chilliwack-Sumas John Les, Minister of Small Business and Economic Development, exchanges ideas with David Gamble of IMW Industries, a Chilliwack company that specializes in roll forming and compressor systems, at the Globe 2004 environment and business trade show in Vancouver. The biennial Globe event took place March 31 to April 2, attracting nearly 10,000 participants - including several world dignitaries - and $425 million in business. April 8, 2004.

Like Gretzky, Lemieux and Sakic, John Les, in his role as new Minister of Small Business and Economic Development, has donned the jersey of Canada’s world junior hockey team. Of course, Les will be a spectator when the best under-20 hockey players in the world converge on Vancouver, Kamloops and Kelowna in 2006 for the World Junior Hockey Championships. The tournament is expected to generate $30 million in economic activity for the province. January 29, 2004.
